Module C ButtonTopic C6: Recognizing Examples

Introduction
What is an example?

Why is it necessary to be able to recognize an example of a term in order to learn and apply a rule?

How to develop criteria questions to recognize an example of a term.

What are the three steps used to recognize an example of a term?

Teaching Suggestions

What is an example?
In all college courses it is necessary to recognize an example of a term being defined in order to successfully learn and apply the information given in the course.

Definition of Example Definition Outline of Example

An example is a specific illustration of the identifying characteristic's) and classification of a term being defined.

Term Being Defined: Example

Classification: Specific illustration

Identifying Characteristics:

1. Identifying characteristic(s)
2. Classification

This can be illustrated by using the term "astronaut."

Definition of astronaut:

An astronaut is a person trained to make rocket flights in outer space.

Example of astronaut: this picture is a specific illustration of a person (classification) who is trained to make a rocket flight in outer space (identifying characteristic). Therefore, this person has the identifying characteristic of a person called an astronaut.

Why is it necessary to be able to recognize an example of a term in order to learn and apply a rule?

Before you can apply any rule to solve a problem in any subject area, it is necessary to be able to recognize an example of the terms used in the rule. This will be illustrated by using a rule from English and algebra.

English: When to use the nominative case

Rule: Use the nominative case when the pronoun or noun is the object of the infinitive to be and the infinitive has no subject.

In order to apply this rule and answer the following question, it is necessary to know the definition and be able to recognize examples of the following terms:

  • nominative case
  • pronoun
  • noun
  • object of the infinitive
  • subject

She was thought to be ____.  (I or me)

In order to correctly answer this question on English grammar, it is necessary to know which term is an example of the nominative case.

Algebra: Using the multiplication property of equality with a fraction

Rule: Get the variable alone by multiplying both sides of the equation by the reciprocal of the coefficient of the variable.

In order to apply this rule to solve the following problem, the student must know to use the following term's definition to recognize examples of them:

  • variable
  • reciprocal
  • coefficient

Solve Equation

In order to solve this equation for X, the student must know how to make the coefficient of the variable a reciprocal.

To successfully learn and apply new information requires not only knowing the definition of the terms used but being able to recognize examples of the terms.

Recognizing examples of a term is an important skill that all instructors emphasize and develop.
